Thy Will be Done.

Market Harborough, and the Grand Union Canal.
This work reflects on the substantial endeavour undertaked by the canal builders of the early 19th century. Despite the adversity of geography and geology, they cut, tunnelled, constructed embankments, and excavated staircase locks.
By the 1840s the canals were in already in decline. Today they seem almost natural, if not incidental. These images record landscapes where canals and chapels were constructed at the same time. Congregations would have heard that they were there, not by their own will, but by a miracle of grace. That Man’s heart is so inclined to sin that it possesses a paralysing moral instability, moved by the Prince of the Power of the Air, fallen star.
